Hi, I just wanted to know a simple thing related to VGA cards

Is Windows not filling up the entire screen normally a resolution problem or a sign of a failing VGA card?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Solution
Your monitor needs to be on BEFORE your computer. If it is not, Windows will Default to a low resolution (640x480 in most cases). Pressing "Detect" forces Windows to go out and query the monitor, which as you've witnessed, usually fixes the issue by bumping up to the Default setting for the SPECIFIC monitor attached.

Example: I have a VERY old CRT monitor it takes several minutes to power up. SO, CPU is usually up and running 1st, and, Defaults to 640x480 resolution. Once the monitor is fully ready, I just press "Detect" and the system sets the resolution to 1600x1200 (which is the preferred / Default resolution for that old 21 inch CRT monitor....)
To be more specific, say I open Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer or even Microsoft Word. There is a gap in the bottom between the Taskbar and whatever it is I have opened. The problem is not there if I press the DETECT button in the Screen Resolution menu.
