Windows not recognizing SSD (w7, asus mobo)

I just hooked up a new SSD for extra storage (samsung 850 evo) but it's not showing up in Disk Management, nor is the Samsung Magician able to detect it. Can't find it in BIOS either, any ideas?

Check SATA cables, unplug all other SATA devices, try another Power Plug, try plugging into another PC if you have one.

I unplugged other SATA and left this one in but nothing happened. Ordered some new SATAs so checking in a couple days when they come. The ssd's worked via USB on a different PC. Is it possible for individual SATA slots on the mobo to be broken?

just tried new SATA cables still not working. the mobo is asus m5a97
