Hello,

I recently inherited a custom built computer, without any documentation or recipts, with windows 7 home premium OEM installed. However, the operating system was so hopelessly cluttered, that I needed to reinstall windows.

I extracted my key with the Magic Jelly Bean Finder tool, and saved that somewhere safe, and used the iso from here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/248995/how_to_install_windows_7_without_the_disc.html

reinstalling windows was easy, activating it was not. Upon not being able to activate windows, I called microsoft several times. Each person was adamant that i needed to contact my OEM, (and yes, I am aware that they are not obligated to provide support for my product). However, I do not have an OEM to contact, as I do not know who to call!

The bottom line is that a computer that at least booted with windows, cannot use windows despite having no hardware changes.

Anything you could do. or any advice would be great!

EDIT:
The reason windows refused to be activated was because I updated the BIOS. I did not think that this would affect anything today(i have done many bios updates across many computers).

To answer the community, this was only installed on one computer. I trust the [former] members in my robotics club to not abuse software. The original builder is long gone (college), so I cannot contact him. Also keep in mind that this was activated just fine not an hour before the problem started. Also, I doubled checked "Windows 7 Home Premium"

I am NOT looking for a hack or a crack, please don't post any, but a solution to get me back up and running.

I tried using "slui.exe 4" from the run dialog, but no phone option popped up...

Update:
The key that Magic Jelly Bean Key Finder extracted from the OS prior to me reformatting and reinstalling was the SLP key, the one bound to the motherboard. This key is no use, as it it bound to the hardware. The BIOS update supposedly changed the table where the SLP key was validated against by Windows. Microsoft cannot help if you only have your SLP key.

What I need to do is to find the COA key, that is included with the stuff windows comes in. The COA key is more like the key that is given by the retail version of windows (from what I understand). All I would have to do is enter the COA key, call microsoft, give them the key, and I'm good to go!

However, seeing as the person who built this computer is long gone to college, and has not maintained contact with our Robotics team, I'll have to buy another key...

Thanks for your prompt responses, I really appreciate it.

Do you have the OEM key?

That should be the OEM key. Go ahead and type that into the Activation window. Call Microsoft and do not speak to a real rep. Go ahead and talk to the robot and read the numbers back to him. When he ask how many computers were installed with the key say 1. He will give you another key back and it will activate windows.

If worst comes to worse email me..

They are right for saying you need to contact the OEM. That is kind of the point for the 'cheaper' OEM license. Support from whoever you bought it from.

But there should be an offline activation option - the phone robot.
In the activation window, there should be an option - activate via phone.

You call, you read a crapload of numbers into the phone. It reads you a crapload of numbers back. Poof - activated.

if you know the original manufacturer then you should be able to get a key from them. If you built it your self then you should try and locate the original cd jewel case that came with the instillation dvd because it will be located there.

nobody can verify ownership that's why its an issue. if he built it his self then he should have the cd jewel case and the serial numbers if you dont have those things then contact the person you bought it from. they may still have the key.

Being that this is a homebuilt you inherited there are many scenarios that could cause this. One of the more common times I see is when someone has installed windows 7 from an upgrade or other OEM disc and then reinstalled from just the upgrade OEM disk. For example I had an old XP machine that I purchased a w7 upgrade OEM for but didn't want to do the upgrade install and wanted a fresh install from the W7 disk. Just installing W7 from the upgrade disk would lead to an activation error for that key. A short google search can lead you to an easy regedit that will allow you to try to activate a fresh install from an upgrade OEM key. I don't think I am allowed to post the directions here, but that is the first thing I would try.

There may be a way to find out based off of your OEM key what version of windows it was meant to activate to make sure you aren't accidentally try to activate a W7 key for the wrong version as my first guess would be you are trying to activate an OEM key that is for a different version of W7 than you have now installed.

Unmarked. But you still need to try the phone thing.

I tried, it is accessed by "slui.exe 4". When I didn't get that option, I tried rearming windows activation. "slmgr -rearm". Both are completely legal options, when used for this purpose.

Nothing yet.

It looks like I'll have to buy windows. again. :-(

I'm having the same problem but I can't find the number for Windows Support to get the automated robot. Can you email me <email address removed by moderator> with the number? I was unable to send a private message to you
