Newly installed Windows 7 Ultimate in place of XP Pro and can only now run HP1280c printer with Vista driver. However, the "Print/Quality" list does not include printing "Banner" paper which it used to with XP pro.

A few days ago, I accidentally deleted Windows.old from the machine - can anyone suggest how I can get this file back again, or can I reinstall Windows XP Pro as separate programme without disturbing Windows 7.

Suggestions would be more than welcome as need my banner printing for genealogy purposes.

thanks

Hi,

It appears several users have posted in the HP forums in reference to the HP Deskjet 1280C printer as well. The work around that seemed to suffice for several users in question can be found here. As other users suggested, it may also be possible to install the printer within Windows XP Mode.

The easiest way to run Microsoft Windows XP within Windows 7 is through Windows XP Mode and Virtual PC just as another member of this thread pointed out. Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC, available on Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate, allow you to run multiple Windows environments, such as Windows XP Mode, from your Windows 7 desktop. For those who do are not currently running Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, or Windows 7 Ultimate, there is an easy upgrade path to Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate through the Windows Anytime Upgrade program. Should you decide to go this route, Microsoft does have a TechNet article Use a USB device in a virtual machine available to offer you additional assistance with the attachment of USB devices within XP Mode.

As far as retrieving the Windows.old folder, one it has been deleted and removed from the Recycle Bin within Windows, it cannot be retrieved. It may be helpful to know, fully, just what the Windows.old folder is. When a custom installation is performed with Windows 7, a backup of the previous system’s contents is made and stored within a Windows.old folder which is kept on the root drive (typically C: ). It is safe to remove this folder as it’s use is solely to offer an extra option in retrieving previously saved files.

Tried Virtual PC but my comp wont support it. However managed to clone from old laptop to bootable external drive, the windows XP and HP operational system and drivers and got the HP1280 printer, including banner dropdown to work! However, all this work was useless exercise as lines will not print and text is only half printing. When the printer is matched up again with the Vista driver, everything returns to normal 'cept banner printer option not there again. Have given up trying, but will contact HP and plead with them for W7 driver as this is a fantastic printer for quality and print options - not come across another one at reasonable price to beat it!
