Every now and again I will proceed to shut down my pc and Windows will bring up the blue screen with the frowning face with this message:
"Your PC has run into a problem and needs to restart". We will restart for you"

I have no clue why it does this

Can anyone help?

windows will save a diagnostic memory dump in these cases.
you want to look in you minidump directory, copy the files to a public server, share them out for public access and someone with a windows debugger can take a quick look and get an idea of why windows shut the system down.
generally, windows will not complete a shutdown if it knows that some data will be lost. BUT, if it does not make progress saving the data then the system will bugcheck after some timeout period and you see the bluescreen.
for these cases it is often drives that need firmware updates to fix the problem. you will not know without guessing unless you provide the minidump file.
