I got a new USB headset: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantronics-GameCom-Gaming-Headset-Surround/dp/B0079G2Y52

I had to download the latest Win8 driver from the Plantronics website: http://www.plantronics.com/us/support/myheadset/control-pc-audio.jsp so the virtual Dolby and other features work. The problem is that everything is really loud because Windows detects it as a speaker which means 2/100 volume level is about normal 20/100 volume level and when I set the volume to 0, there is still sound of again about 20/100.

I've uninstalled, re-installed, rebooted etc. I've tried Troubleshooting and Windows just says your volume is too low and nothing else.

Browsing the Microsoft forums any similar queries tend to end up with a Troubleshooting method and then, oddly, no replies after that. -.-

Is there a way I can force-change the playback device type so its Headphones and not Speakers?

Cheers.

I disabled the normal speakers but nothing happened. I re-enabled them and then disabled my headphone/"speakers" which meant sound from my headphones stopped, and sound output defaulted to normal speakers (I don't actually have speakers plugged in, its just the normal output).
