Windows recovery

Hello,
My computer got the black screen (Windows Recovery) but any time I select something, it shuts down but goes back to it. I do not have a recovery CD but am wondering if there is something I can download to another computer, save on a flash drive and use it to fix the other computer? Even if it's a temporary fix in order for me to try to back up some files and then take it to a professional. This is for a Gateway laptop with Vista--64 bit

Are you able to startup in Safe Mode and save files ?
You could then restore to factory settings, or even possibly fix the problem.

On the other computer you could download & burn a "Rescue CD. to boot from.
