Windows resets my refresh rate to 60hz once I hit apply at 144hz.

I currently have a MSI G27C2 144hz Gaming monitor:

and i'm running a (pretty new) MSI Gtx 1070 8g gpu:

My problem is that when I go into Nvidia control panel and change the refresh rate from 60hz to 144hz the screen goes black for a couple of seconds, my monitor gives "no signal" and after a couple more seconds the monitor turns on again but still only with 60hz enabled. At the moment i'm using a DVI-D 24+1 cable so I think it should be able to run 144hz just fine. Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

I double checked and it is a DVI-D 24+1 cable.. I will try a DisplayPort cable from a friend thanks for the tip!

Tried it.. it appears this monitor has a problem using the DisplayPort cable and the screen sometimes turns black for a second.. this happens like once every 15 minutes.. I would really like the DVI-D cable just to work.. so does anyone know what might cause this problem?
