Windows says disk error but chkdsk is ok

Got disk problems - not sure what to do next. Hers the order of events:

Installed windows updates.
Next time computer was booted, it prompted disk errors, backed up as suggested.
Computer going very slowly.
Ran chkdsk /f on disk - said there are NO ERRORS and nothing corrected.
Computer runs fine for a few mins, then slow again, then more messages saying errors on disk, backup data.
Have run spybot and scanned disk with AVG just in case I have some sort of virus but not really getting anywhere.
Computer gets slower and slower until it stops working, then I have to boot into safe mode/network and can do things and all seems ok but when I try and reboot into normal mode, it all starts going slow again.
Does chkdsk know better than windows o/s about disk problems?
Running on a Toshiba laptop using Windows 7.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Your disk has bad sectors run "chkdsk /r /x" it will scan for the bad sectors and mark them as not usable.

Your statement that "it prompted for disk errors" is a little ambiguous. Is it the BIOS or Windows that is complaining about errors? Sometimes the drive develops an excessive number of bad sectors, triggering a BIOS SMART failure. However, because these sectors have been reallocated (ie replaced with spares), Windows/Chkdsk is unaware that a problem exists.

Try a comprehensive SMART diagnostic. Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

Have run chkdsk /r /x but this has not made any difference to the way the laptop is behaving. I'm also currently trying to reinstall windows from O/S from Toshiba s/w.....(no CD's supplied - its all on the internal disk....darn it!) The laptop is currently still trying to load windows O/S but is seriously taking its time (2 hours so far)

Download and run the manufacturer of your hard drive disk diagnostic software from their web site. It is not unusual for a hard drive to become faulty like this in a laptop due to it being knock while it is on.

Chkdsk checks the file system for errors, not the disk itself. It can be used to check for bad sectors but this is rudimentary and inferior to using actual disk maintenance and monitoring software
