Windows says I'm connected to the internet but no pages can be loaded!

Hi y'all!

Here's what happened to my computer : a few days ago there was a very short power cut that lasted 30 secs, which turned my computer off. When the power came back, I had that reflex of turning my computer back on and mysteriously another power cut occurred that lasted about 30 secs as well. Ever since my computer hasn't been able to go on the internet...

I've tried many things :
- make a master reset on the modem (it worked temporarily)
- restart my modem
- cut the power off the modem for 10 secs
- change the wire that connects my pc to the modem
- change from port A to port B on the modem
- restart my pc
- uninstall my Lan card's driver and reinstalling it from the device manager on win 7

The only thing I think is left to try is maybe buying another network card which I am not sure if it would solve my issue.

Also the lights on the modem are all solid.

I have two PCs connected to this modem, one that is mine (the broken one) and the other belongs to my brother, although mine can't have any access to internet, my brother's seems to be working flawlessly. I'm actually writting this thread on his pc.

Another thing that I found really weird is that on the windows taskbar it says that I'm connected to the internet, but when I'm trying to load a random page on the internet, firefox tells me "The connection has timed out".

Oh and by the way, my computer still seems to recognize my Lan card : Realtek PCIe GBE family controller.

Has my Lan card been fried by the power cuts?

hopefully someone here may enlighten me on this! :)

PC specs, just in case? :
i5 3570k
radeon HD 7870
Asus motherboard P8Z77-V LK
120 ssd OCz vertex 3
1tb HDD
Kingston HyperX 8gb
Corsair power supply TX650
Windows 7 professional 64-bit

Bought all the parts separately and assembled the computer myself.

This is the danger of not using a UPS. Even a cheapo UPS that gives you a lousy 5 mins runtime can help prevent these sudden ON/OFF events that can cause all kinds of problems. And it can very difficult to pin down whether it's a hardware failure, or perhaps just some files that got corrupted.

I assume you're actually using a router (or modem+router combo device) since you're sharing the internet access. Can you do any local networking, such as share/transfer files? That would at least tell us if this is a problem specific to the internet, or ANY network activity, local or internet (and thus perhaps a hardware failure).

Hi,
thx for the quick reply ! I am actually using a UPS I just forgot to mention it. And yes I am also using that modem + router combo you're talking about. Let me try to share files (first time doing this, not so sure how)

Are both PCs running Win7 and using homegroups?

Also, let's see your network config.

Hit Windows key + R, copy/paste the following into the box, and hit enter.

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > %tmp%\tmp.txt && start notepad %tmp%\tmp.txt"

This will open a file detailing your network configuration. Cut and paste the contents to this forum.

These configs look pretty good except for one small thing. Both have the same host name, Kevin-PC. This should be unique per machine. But this wouldn't explain the “connection has timed out” problem. But it might explain the homegroups problem.

Ok I've set up a homegroup, now it works both PCs are connected to it. When I dropped files on the homegroup from the broken one, the working PC doesn't see them. I dropped a jpeg and a docx.

Hi again,

I went to futureshop to get myself a network card, after installation everything works fine now! I guess I'll never know if a file got corrupted or anything but changing the network card worked for me !

Thx for your help and your time ! It is really appreciated!
