Windows Security hangs on Full Scan?

Hi guys,

I've had a bit of time on my hands this week so decided to do a bit of system maintenance... I appear to have an issue with Security, I've tried several times now, and after updates, sfc etc., and I still can't get it to complete.

From memory, I've sure I used to run Full Scans and they'd take about an hour? My current attempts just appear to be hanging at varying stages of the scan.

Any ideas?

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

Even though the window says "Feel free to keep working while we scan your device" try to time the scans when you do not have to work or do anything at all. Just allow the scan to run all by itself. Determine if the scan time decreases and/or the hang-ups stop.

Check Task Manager and Resource Monitor for anything else that may be running: some app trying to update, backup, or simply phone home. Another place to look is Process Explorer (Microsoft, free).

Look in Reliability History and Event Viewer. Either one or both tools may be capturing some error code, warning, or even an informational event when the scans hang,

Objective being to discover some culprit or culprits. Could be some combination of circumstances.

Also if you leave the scan alone the scan might come to a halt because of power management settings.
If the computer is idle, it could enter a low-power mode and Windows Security will stop scanning.

Fairly reasonably spec's machine, details in sig, with bang up to date 11 on it. I'm 99% certain Full Scans were running just fine a month or so ago? - I just assumed it'd become broken after an update or something.

I've noticed on the times the scans have hung, that my cpu temps get quite toasty? Might be a coincidence though.
