Hi, I built a windows server 2012 R2 with the intention of remotely connecting into it. I got the server up and running, however I am having issue seeing the server under the network tab when I remotely access into it. I set up remote access on the server side, and set up a windows built in VPN on the client side. The VPN connects even through my WAN link, and I'm able to ping the servers ip address,, however I have no such luck accessing the server and any other shared files on it. I am currently using PTPP, but I plan on implementing a more secure connection once I get this to work. I am sharing my files through an SMB file sharing service. I have opened ports 1723, 135-139, and 445 on my router. I am also able to access my server and the shared files on my LAN link when I disable my anitvirus firewall, however that doesn't help when I'm connected remotely through my WAN link. I didn't set up a DHCP or DNS service on my server, I just gave my server and my vpn clients a static ip address. If anyone has any ideas on what might be wrong your help would be greatly appreciated!

Once you have established VPN thru the router, you don't need any additional ports, especially ones related to file sharing.
To be able to see what happens - go to Events Viewer on the server, and start poking thru RRAS logs.
You'll also have to bind Server service to VPN adapter on the server.
