and wants to run his own domain from that server - what type of firewall
should he have running?? If you need more info on hardware/software, please
let me know as I'm lost on this - and HE should know what he's doing, he
actually programs software for the gov....geeezz.....anyway, thanks for any
help in this direction

If your brother doesn't already know the answer, then he should not be
connecting a server to the Internet.

If you are going to have public facing servers allowing HTTP access,
then he should consider something as small as a WatchGuard SOHO X5 unit
or larger if it's going to support many people X700 or X1000.

LOL yep, that's what I told him - from what I can gather - he wants to put
up a website on 'his' server and allow other people to view it ... why he
can't find this info out for himself is beyond me - guess he thinks I have
nothing to do -

Unless he is using a business grade internet connection, most home grade
service will not normally permit servers.

I've seen many people that "thought" they could do it put a website up
on a Windows box and be hacked within a couple hours, others in a couple
days....

Have him get a real firewall before he does it - and make sure that his
ISP permits users to have personal web servers online.

Microsoft has a lot of articles on securing IIS, he should read them.

Why should he be expected to know everything about computers
because he is a programmer? That's like expecting a
cellphone user to knwo about the phone network because he
sends messages over it.

Most programmers have very little knowledge of computers.
