Under Windows7 Pro 32 bit
sound driver for microphone for headset causes this problem.
When I plug in the headset it shows the mic is connected to the rear mike. Clicking on anything: front mic or rear mic to attempt to change it brings up the message
"windows shell common dll has stopped working "
Then the sound panel must be closed.
Tried replacing some audio drivers with those found on my windows7 64 bit computer (newer files + it does have working mic) but this did not solve the problem. Had to uninstall sound devices & then it reinstalled all the sound files on reboot.
My headphone & speaker use native Windows drivers: the mfgr (Plantronics) doesn't issue custom drivers.
supposedly the sound files in question are:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\drmk.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\portcls.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\USBAUDIO.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SysFxUl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WMALFXGFXDSP.dll
