I have a backup file of my system image on my drive which takes a load of space on my drive, is it safe for me to delete it?

Yes. But make sure that you keep a system image somewhere - maybe on another drive. I have two drives on my pc with the second drive holding system images. I typically keep two images - one for a current weekly back up and another that I have renamed (I create a new image every month or so along with the repair disk).
