So I came home to THIS today. The drive seems to be working and I can access everything just fine, but obviously I'm a bit concerned. I've been moving files and doing some much needed organization on the drive anyway since I got home, but I'm wondering why this might be happening. The computer hadn't been touched since I left it the night before and I have no idea when these warnings may have come up. I've been home for over 6 hours now and no new warnings or messages have appeared, however. I've opened files from all over the drive, moved many to my other storage drives with no issues.

Back up anything important, ASAP. I could be your drive is about to fail. You need to do a disk-check, and allow the software to check all the sectors on the drive to see if there is a problem which windows can repair or not. So backup and allow the system to do a disk-check, your PC will restart and check your drives, but I advise you, to backup your files first, as there is a good possibility might die on the next restart. Good luck.

P.S. Don't mind me saying but why is your task-bar so derped out?

". . . . why is your task-bar so derped out?"

because he's moved it from the bottom of the screen to the side. It always looks odd when it's vertical, I couldn't stand having it there. Horizontal at the bottom or top is where it should be 'cos that's the only way you can see it's various icons properly. Still, if it works for him that's fine.

Whenever I ran across that famous Windows' "format this y/n?" - agreed! Ensure one has recent restorable backups or make them today, if not yesterday. I can often fix the problem if it was a "logical" and not a physical cause.

Ok, I've finally had time to move everything to my other drives and format this drive. It seems to be fine now but I'm worried that the drive will crap out on me. Is there a diagnostic tool that I can run on it to ensure that it won't die on me? Or should I just abandon this drive entirely even though it seems to be working just fine now (have tested by moving files to it and accessing them from it)?

P.S. it's derpy cuz I like it derpy. seriously, try putting it on the side for a while and auto-hide it with small icons. keeps your launch icons in one nice small spot, stacks multiples nicely, and gives you that much extra desktop and window area since the task-bar isn't using unnecessary space.

On the disk with the problem, right click > properties > [tools tab] > "error checking" click on "check now..." check both boxes, and I usually let it fix it self if it can. exit and then just restart, and when it boots it will do a disk check.

here is a screenshot of where you have to be...
