Windows Update Failures, Driver and Boot Issues

Hello. I posted about my ASUS X555DA laptop in a previous thread some months ago. Since then I've had recurring issues whose development is played out over at TenForums.

To summarize, I had an earlier problem crippling my laptop that I was able to "solve" by reverting to an old version of the AMD graphics driver and holding back driver updates. Recently, however, I've had Windows updates failing, and at one point they crashed my system and made me unable to boot; I had to fix it using command prompt after a lengthy process. Now the computer runs fine again, and all the diagnostics appear to show my hard drive in good condition (these can be found at the TenForums link above). But I'm disconnected from the internet, because as soon as I connect, the Windows update that killed my system begins downloading again.

I've been working with someone over at TenForums, but I feel I may be in something of a cul-de-sac with him or her and would appreciate some other opinions on what to do to diagnose the root problem and/or how to fix it. If I can't find or fix the issue behind all this, I'd like to stop updates completely to keep my laptop stable and usable as long as possible.

Thanks for your time.

seems to me that if you go to windows services and stop the windows update service then set the service to be disabled it will not run.
service name should be wuauserv
just tried it, stopped the service, set it to disabled, hit apply and will reboot to confirm it does not start back up.

just checked the service remains disabled after the reboot. It should not do any downloads while in this state and it should not get triggered to startup while in the disabled state.

maybe I am looking at the wrong hardware https://www.amd.com/en-us/products/processors/notebook-tablet#

AMD® APU A10-8700P this should be a CPU +GPU package updates to fix bugs inside the CPU should be done by BIOS microcode updates, or the windows installed CPU microcode patcher or the driver from the AMD website for the notebook https://support.amd.com/en-us/download/apu?os=Windows+10+-+64

generally blocking windows updates is not a good fix.
