Windows Update Off

So recently I've been trying to update my PC just using the windows update feature on Windows 7 but every time I try it just gets to about 80% and says "Failed to update, reverting changes". My question now is, is it safe to turn off the Windows Update feature? It's always just "Update for Windows 7 for x64-based systems" updates anyway and even after these updates failing my PC hasn't ran into any issues that I've noticed so I don't mind turning off the feature I'm just wondering if there is any other added risk to turning it off?

How many updates are you doing?

It says I have 54 Important updates and 41 optional ones. I always try to update them from time to time but to no avail

Do small batches of updates such as 10-15. You most likely have failed updates if you do it all in one lump.

try deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder in Windows folder. turn off windows updater in service.msc and delete that folder. turn on updates then restart and try running updates again.
