So yesterday I had to reload windows on one of my laptops and I did. When I went to update it I left it checking for updates overnight for 12 hours and in the morning it was still 'checking for updates'. Is it actually checking for updates or isnt it? It doesnt give any errors and its a fresh copy of Windows 7 PRO with an activated licence key.

Solution
Thats the sad state of Windows 7 updates, they are getting less priority.
You can try restarting and try searching again.
They should be fixing this though and making them bigger packages like in Windows 10.
Though unsure when they'll roll that out.

Though you could just use the Windows 7 Key to do a fresh install of 10.

Yeah thats kinda what I thought. The problem is, this is not my laptop and it needs to be done by tonight and the person to whom it belongs needs Windows 7 so. Thanks for your answer!

Over time, Windows will also proactively add patches to the Monthly Rollup that have been released in the past. Our goal is eventually to include all of the patches we have shipped in the past since the last baseline, so that the Monthly Rollup becomes fully cumulative and you need only to install the latest single rollup to be up to date. We encourage you to move to the Monthly Rollup model to improve reliability and quality of updating all versions of Windows.
