Hi, I've recently heard about the windows update/patch that removes the terrible and buggy windows spectre/meltdown "fix" (article about that here - http://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-issues-a-windows-patch-to-disable-intels-buggy-spectre-fix/) and want to know if I have the right windows patch. The patch listed in the article is KB4078130, however I have KB4073543. Do I have the right microsoft patch? (the one that removes the horrible Spectre/meldown "fix")

I have an Intel CPU and so I have manually downloaded that patch. However - since I have always used the automatic update installer built into windows and thus previously never had to update manually, I have no idea what to do now. Help.

Nothing. You are fine. Just update to the newest update that I linked to upthread.

But, it's just a .exe file downloaded directly from my browser that's now sat on my desktop. Are you sure there's nothing else I need to do?

Did you install it?

No, Because I'm not sure how. When I try to open it, (i.e. double click on it) nothing appears to happen

Skip it then and just use the link that I provided upthread.
