i have my windows auto update off
and all non required services off
and no i cant get updates from
ms wth ?

i haven't changed anything in services
lately this is something that just started
i have never had auto update running

Autoupdate in services has to be on to use the windows update site.

Make sure these services are not disabled ( use MSCONFIG to review or run SERVICES.MSC):
Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS)
Cryptographic Services
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Restore Service

Then try Windows Update.

If it fails, once more: Use Notepad or Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Scroll down all the way for the set of lines for the last session.
What does it say? Errors are usually 0Xnnnnnnn (with some text)
