I ran into this same issue when I performed a system restore to February 28th of this year. Microsoft apparently added an update for Windows 7 that slightly changes the update protocol, effectively breaking the update process for anyone who does not have the protocol change update installed. Not only that, the required update is not available to download in the old protocol any more - since the Windows Update servers have all been updated to the new protocol.

I really need to drive up to Redmond and slap those people around.

The "easy" fix is to check and see if the protocol update is installed and manually download and install it if it is not present. The update is labeled KB3138612 and can be found at Microsoft...

I have had it sit right were you are for 6 hours and it finally started downloading. My advice would be just wait, especially if you are trying to do these updates during peak usage hours. Let it run overnight and I bet when you wake up your updates will be downloaded and installed.

Okay i will defiantly try that tn thank you and i will give you an update tomorrow

Hi

I had this problem when I installed a new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium onto my new SSD 2 months ago. It had around 200 updates needed doing so I set it to update, I came back 6 hours later and it had failed all of them.

So I went into the Windows Updates and set it so that it will search when I tell it to and download and install when I tell it to.

After that I set it to download then install 10 updates then restart and then I rinsed and repeated this for an hour. I only had about 10 updates fail out of the 200 odd updates and this time the failed updates were removed/deleted from the list as they were probably not compatible/needed.

But ye Windows Update is still buggy, just do the updates one small chunk at a time.

Hope this helps.

did you try to set windows update to show you the update and let you decide with one to install also install the sp1 first if you dont have it and the net framework need to be also install one at the time they nedd to restart system evry time .

It should say a certain number of xxx optional updates / xxx recommended updates. Click either of these then when the window loads click the tab on the less to show all updates bot recommended and optional then just have 10 of the recommended ones ticked then install them.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

Just be sure to install it after you disconnect from the internet and reboot - otherwise the existing update system will be running so the installation will never finish.

Also, for clean installations you should probably download the Microsoft System Update Readiness tool. It installs some of the old patches in the "right order" so that they work. This can also be found at Microsoft:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3132

The System Update Readiness tool should be installed before the protocol update is installed. In both cases the computer should not be connected to the internet when they are installed so that the existing Windows Update system is not stuck trying to find out if there are updates.

Good luck!
