windows updgrade from 7 to 8.1 pro but screen wont reconnect

I am upgrading a pc from win 7 to win 8.1 pro. after it installs and restarts, the pc appears to restart but the screen doesnt reconnect up reboot. I've unplugged everything and to no avail.....
help

Need the specs on your system.

Disconnect from the GPU, and plug the monitor into the onboard graphics. You may need to remove the gpu from the system.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge on the subject, but I don't know what that means. I have two monitors, one plugged into VGA and one into the DVI port. Why is this playing into installing win 8.1? This is the only time it happens. And then it's a bear to get started with the monitor connected again.
