A couple of days ago, my Windows user profile became corrupt (still not sure how). After extensive troubleshooting, I eventually dealt with that by creating a new profile and transferring over my data. Everything seemed fine at first, until I noticed that absolutely no sound was playing.

I have gone through the following troubleshooting steps:

  • ■ Made sure the sound mixer was unmuted.
    ■ Plugged in headphones to make sure the problem wasn't just with the speakers.
    ■ Made sure the new profiles have a device set for audio playback.
    ■ Checked multiple profiles to make sure it wasn't a problem with a single one.
    ■ Checked for new audio drivers through Device Manager.
    ■ Used Windows' built-in troubleshooter for audio playback.
The sound was working perfectly until my original profile became corrupted, and I didn't touch anything related the audio while dealing with that problem.

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx notebook (old, yes, but it's all I've got). It's running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64. The audio device is "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC". Device Manager also displays something called "Intel(R) Display Audio", but that is not displayed in Control Panel's sound menu, with all devices using the IDT software.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
