"windows was unable to complete the format" of a flash drive NTFS
These were drives I just bought;
by default the way they came, would not store more than about 115 mp3 songs.

Then I am sure that that is your problem. You can go to almost any store in the United States and buy a quality 8gb stick for a couple of US dollars, so there is no reason for anybody here in the US to buy cheap Chinese USB sticks that are essentially trash the minute you buy it. I do not know where you live or what the market is like in your country, but if you can try to buy a different USB stick.

Would perhaps cloning a good flash drive to the generic possibly produce a more usable drive?
Any suggestions for a good flash drive cloning program, preferably free?
