Hey,

I'm not sure if Microsoft is going to try to do what they planned on earlier but, it looks as if they are going to merge the Win9x line and WinNT line. Whistler looks to hold support for both games, and applications. It appears to be the most dramatically redone system yet. (Well for a start it's 64 bit)

Whistler will appear in two main versions, personal and professional (the latter probably split into workstation, server and data center). The personal version will replace the win9x series, professional replaces NT/2000.

It is not that great a leap from the current 2000 release (it advertises itself as NT5.1), however the UI is greatly different, being much prettier;-)

The convergence between win9x and NT is almost complete with the release of DX8 for 9x(Me) and 2000, I hardly ever fire up Me now. Gaming is well supported in 2000, without the instability of win9x(Me).

I just hope Micro$oft get it right this time, the networking has been very flakey so far, and the latest beta won't even install on my machine (crashes before bootlogging can start!) :-(

Running an Athlon 600 + Crea. Ann Pro on an Asus K7V, 384Meg ram, 20G Maxtor Diamond Max+, Linksys LNE100TX network card. Gets to the startup screen and freezes on 'bout the fourth dot (even when only vid card left in). Boots OK in safe mode. Tried booltogging, but nothing written. W2K works fine. Tried turning off all 'enhancements' in bios (incl. AGP4x & FW, write combining etc.) All previous builds worked.
Network card hasn't worked since the first alpha I installed (although everything else did!). As Whistler don't include Linksys drivers, been trying W2K drivers from Linksys site. They work after installation (ignoring the request to re-boot), but hangs machine on next re-start.

Thanks for link. Mann, too long time to wait, but if it will run OK then it worth it. 😎
