so a rhetoric question windows xp 32 bit or windows 7 64bit ?? what os version is best for overall performance and gaming my pc specs == core 2 duo e6300 1.86ghz oc 2.0.5ghz,4gb*2x2gb ddr3 1333mhz dual channel ram,geforce gt 220 1gb,7200rpm 16mb catche hdd ,suggestions ?????

Win 7 x64 is the better choice. It is newer, supported, and more secure. Win XP is getting quite dated and is full of security holes.

You will see little difference in terms of performance. W7 generally boots quicker and is more reliable than XP, so you'll spend less time on maintenance and troubleshooting.

Plus, since you can only use up about 3Gb RAM on a 32-bit OS, W7 64 bit will allow you to use your full 4GB.

For gaming, I would really recommend upgrading your graphics card. Your processor is a bit weak too but you will get a bigger impact by getting a faster graphics card.

I would definitely go with Windows 7 64-bit for the following reasons:
1. It's still supported by M$.
2. Most newer programs and games are now being written to work with 7 and not XP.
3. You can overcome the 3Gb barrier that you get with a 32-bit kernel (which you want to be able to do.)

Like mentioned before by bwrlane, if you have the option of upgrading your GPU I would definitely do so. You could probably drop another $50-100 on into a different card and get one twice as good.

Where are you getting the card from if you don't mind me asking?

Don't do windows 8 until all the kinks are worked out win8 is not going to work as well as 7 and on the point of 32 to 64 go 64 if you are ever going to upgrade your system, and believe me you do, you will want 64 bit for the support of more ram

thnx for replies yes new vga would be great but cant really affoard any of theese suggested ,only used i can afford and something like gt 640 ....
