After installing updates my computer continuously restarts. I get the
Windows XP Home Edition screen, then black and a blue flicker, then it
restarts over and over. I have researched this a lot. I know that I have to
get into the recovery console, but my computer will not allow me to press R
when booting from the CD to install this. I have already installed Windows
XP Home Edition with SP2 to the existing partition so that I could find help
on this issue. Nothing seems to be working and reformatting the hard drive
is not an option, important info on it. PLEASE HELP!! I'm at the end of my
rope here.

Trudi;
2 installations of Windows XP on the same partition.
That is not recommended and your fix now is the format you wanted to avoid.
Simply back-up all your important data and perform a Clean Installation.
A good way to make sure you start right is to delete then create new
partitions:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/cleanxp.htm

If I misunderstood and you do not have two installations on the same
partition:
1. How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer if
the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875355

2. Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

3. Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/repaxp.htm

4. When you are ready for SP-2, follow the Service Pack Installation
Checklist:

I had this problem in the past and this is what worked. I cannot back up my
files if I can not get into my previous operating system. It continually
restarts not allowing me to enter. I have tried to boot in safe mode, tried
Last Known Good, tried to get into recovery console. It won't allow me to do
nothing that has been suggested to me. My main problem right now is that I
can't install the recovery console so that I may reboot and repair. The
error message I receive is STOP c000021a (Fatal System Error) Session
Manager Initilization 0xc000026c. When I turned off the option to have
computer restart. I hope this all makes sense to you. Thanks.

Can you get to the boot options menu? (Restart your computer and start
pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.)

If so, you can try the "Last Known Good Configuration" or you can boot into
Safe Mode and restore your system.

"A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP"

Your problem may actually have nothing to do with the updates; it may have
another cause, which did not manifest itself until you restarted your
computer.

Yes, I can get into my boot options, but it doesn't work with any of the
options.

Trudi;
If you can boot to the second installation, you should be able to access
your data from the first installation.
If the original data was in My Documents, search for "my documents" and you
should find both the old and new file.
From there you can easily back-up the data.
