Windows XP doesn't recognize usb flash drive

I have a box running windows xp home. I have another identicle box as well. The first one will not recognize any kind of flash drive. My kids have mp3 players they just plug into a usb port and go. they also have a basic flash drive that does the same. But the first box will sort of recognize the drive for a second and then it doesn't see it any more. I don't have this problem in the other one. When you plug one into that machine windows pulls up a box asking what you want to do. I've plugged these things into my machine (windows xp pro) and it pulls up a box as well. I just can't figure out what's up with the first one.

Are the USB ports fully functional?

Yes I have other usb items (mouse, ups etc) plugged in and they all work properly. I have tried using a different usb slot but the same thing happened. It see's the drive for a second or 2 but then nothing. I'm thinking a driver update maybe but I wouldn't know where to get one. I'm just reaching here.
