Windows xp doesnt see my sata hard drive, but the bios does

I am trying to reload a sata hard drive in a laptop. It worked for a couple years, we had some software isssues and decided to format the drive and start fresh. The bios sees the hard drive, but when you actually try to install the opsys, it gets thru everything until it comes to a screen saying that it doesnt see a hard drive installed....There is one!! Bios sees it! I then thought get a new drive....does the same thing to a brand new known good drive. They are sata drives and bios recognized each of the drives. So does anyone know what this may be. Is it the controller on the motherboard in this gateway laptop? I am ready to toss it!!! Any input would be appreciated!! Thanks :)

I ran the Hitachi drive fitness test on the original hard drive (per Hitachi's recommendation)...came up saying the drive was good. I formatted the orig drive externally on another system, then tried reloading...That's all I have done...I cant believe the old drive is bad and so is a brand new one? I feel like something is altered on the motherboard somewhere, but I don't know what to do to correct this. I just need to get a drive going in this system with an opsys installed...

Now that you say that, I remember it from an Intel motherboard. This one has PhoenixBios Setup Utility...I do not see that as an option...I don't mean to sound stupid, but I have gone thru everything on this one and don't see AHCI...it may not be on option on this board?

is the bios set to ide mode or raid mode for the drive.

of your running xp and it can find the drive it will need a driver installed on windows xp installation ( press f6 and install driver )

by setting the SATA drive to IDE mode it will work natively with windows installation..

what board do you have

this motherboard must not have a raid option, as it is not in the bios to change. This is a laptop. I am running xp. When I run windows setup, it offers F6 if you have raid or scsi drivers to put in...I have neither, but I did select F6 as to give it a try...there too, it comes up "setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify your adapter." It goes on to say I have none loaded....so again it doesnt recognize a drive.

I cant change it from sata to ide, as it is not an option...Not sure of the motherboard, it's a Gateway MX6961 laptop.

Sorry to be a nuisance.

There is nothing wrong with the drive.
You have to do one of these 2 things, as XP does NOT contain drivers for any SATA devices. It will NEVER, EVER be able to "see" an SATA drive unless you do 1 of these 2 things.
1. In your BIOS, there is a setting for the SATA controller. You can set it to work in AHCI mode, or IDE mode. You can set it to IDE mode. The install will then be able to see the hard drive. If you want to run in AHCI mode, then you MUST do this......
2. Obtain the AHCI drivers for your particular motherboard, and controller chipset, (not the RAID drivers, they are something entirely different) and supply them to the XP install when you are prompted for them, after hitting "F6". (When you hit F6, the install will continue for a minute or so, then it will prompt you to insert the disk containing the needed drivers)
There is no other way around it, you must do one of these 2 things to install XP onto a SATA drive.

Of course there is a 3rd alternative, if your laptop supports it, you can install either Vista or Win7, they both have driver support built into the install program for AHCI SATA mode.

Here are the instructions directly from the Gateway support site, this is where you go to get the AHCI drivers for your Laptop, and apparently this Laptop BIOS may indeed be locked into AHCI mode only.

Per the instructions at Gateway you have to use a USB floppy drive for the install

Overview

This is the SATA hard drive driver for Gateway notebook computer models listed in the Applicable Part Numbers section below. This driver is needed during installation of a non-Gateway supplied operating system.


Identification

If you have a Gateway notebook computer listed in the Applicable Part Numbers section below and are installing an operating system other than what shipped with your Gateway computer, install this driver.


Installation

Note: Installation of this driver requires the use of a floppy disk drive. If your computer does not have an internal floppy disk drive, an external USB drive can be used instead.

Download the driver file to the desktop, and then perform the following steps.

1. If you have not already done so, locate and double-click the D00455-001-001.exe file that you downloaded from the Internet and execute the file. Files extract to the CCabs\D00455-001-001 folder on your hard drive.

2. Insert a blank floppy disk in the floppy disk drive.

3. In the CCabs\D00455-001-001 folder, double-click F6flpy32.exe.

4. Click OK to start the disk creation.

5. The disk creation dialog box closes when the disk is complete.

6. During the installation of Windows you will need install this SATA controller driver. Press the F6 key on your keyboard to install a third party controller driver.

7. The Windows installation program requires the use of a USB floppy disk drive and the floppy disk that was created above.

8. The Windows installation procedure attempts to load the drivers twice; once directly after the F6 selection, and a second time after the installation files copy to the hard drive.

9. Select the "- Intel(R)82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller Mobile ICH7M" option as listed.

Note: To find the required selection it may be necessary to scroll down even though there is no indication to scroll down.

Removal

Because the computer must have these SATA drivers when using a non-Gateway supplied operating system, these drivers are necessary and should not be removed.


Troubleshooting

If you have trouble installing the drivers, try creating another floppy disk, or use a USB floppy disk drive.

I had a similar situation awhile back!
BIOS sees it; Windows doesn't!
Hours and hours of frustration finally led me to Tweakui where I discovered that the two Drive letters that Windows couldn't see were hidden by Tweakui.
It solved my problem!

Thank you all for your contributions to my question. Sorry for the late reply...Yes, the drive was fine...3rd party drivers that would enable to drive to be recognized. I was in a hurry to complete this, but decided to get the original restore disks from Gateway and those drivers were all included, so made it really easy for me. I will know for the future how to handle this situation... again, thanks for the help everybody!

I'm having the same issue, except Gateway will not give me (or even let me buy from them) the original restore disks. Any ideas where I could get the genuine Gateway restore disc? I've looked on eBay, but none of the are actual Gateway restore discs - they're driver updates only that require XP to already be loaded. Any ideas/thoughts would be most helpful

Hi. I have somewhat of a different problem. Can't download Windows Service Pack 3 to XP (Gateway NX560). Thought maybe the drivers needed to be updated, but all the instructions such as the one pasted above are not consistent with what my computer does (e.g. there's never a "Cabs" folder after downloading or extracting).

Gateway gave me this link http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/docexpress.asp?st=pn&param=1008652# which is different from the one I'd been working off of, but I think the downloads (and instructions) are the same just a lot more of them because it's not specific to my version.

From what I read above it seems risky for me to continue to try to update bios, SATA, etc, drivers not knowing quite what I'm doing (and I don't even know which one might be affecting the Windows update). Could it cause problems like those described above?

@ baggoth1971You mentioned a Gateway driver updates disk for XP? Didn't know there was one. Could you let me know where you saw that. I looked on Ebay and don't see one for updates. I did however see a bunch for driver restore disks. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-Drivers-Recovery-Restore-CD-Disk-Disc-System-/220911807456?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336f5eabe0. I think you're saying you need the entire XP package though. I hope you've had success.

1) How does one know what drivers should be updated?
2) Could old drivers be preventing the Windows pack 3 from downloading (it also says it couldn't download the "catalog files"? If so, any ideas which one.
3) is it safe to pick and choose drivers to update?

I have a Gateway laptop NX560.

Great solution! It worked. I downloaded the required HDD SATA drive from HP and managed to insert it into the XP image and it worked perfectly!

windows, XP does not have any support for Sata 1 ,2 or 3.
xp came out in 2001 and sata in 2002
SP3 release of XP with SP3 had some near useless support for SATA.
history is the answer here.

best way to solve this is get the XP driver from the maker of your SATA device.
be that, a MOBO or a ADD-in Card. "asus dot com or whomever"
or lacking that from the chip maker of your SATA CHIP. AMD or Intel or VIA or ? or ? read the chip write down the number.

btw , if you want, with XPlite , a product you can make a new XP disk that has all the sata drivers ON CD !

i did that and have the FULL set of "bashrat the sneaky drivers" (all of them)on the CD install.
you can in fact add any you want to the pool. at any time.

so, now i can install XP on any box...... guess how i know all that, did it 100s of times.

this should put to bed the rumors on XP. it's 11 years old.

there are only 2 ways (basic) to reload an antique laptop.
1: using GATEWAY l disks, seems you lost them. (is not Gateway sort of dead, in this business?)

2: using real MS XP disks, you have to buy them. (ms dont sell them so you need to buy a used disk and that needs to come with the license or you will not be able to reg. it with microsoft.



3) is it safe to pick and choose drivers to update?
Safe, sure its not going to catch fire....?? but if you mess up?
1: IDE /or Sata port, it will not boot
2: or the internet driver , you cant get new drivers or updates, so you need 2 working computers, one to fix and one to connect to the internet in a DOWN conditoin.

I have a Gateway laptop NX560. I feel your pain.

First off , loading windows (REAL CD) is very hard on laptops in general.
ive done it vast times. so know.

In a worse case sitution (IBM stink pads) it can be near impossible ,sans IBM disks.
but on a gateway , you , must learn what it needs)
what are the chip in your gate way.

you load XP if lucking the GW can find the CDROM
if lucky it can see the HDD.
if lucky , windows loads.
lets say it does.
now go to device manager and find all the things dead.
then we fix them 1 by 1 , this is how it is done.'


btw some GW have a recover partition, and instructions in the manual on how to use it.
if the HDD was replace (surely it has after 6- 12 years) then it will be missing this special partition.

not spam, just answering (try to) all the questions (im a retired tech, 36years at tech.)

windows update.
to up date;
you can do it auto or manual
to up date you go to control panel and update.

dont expect xp updates to fix missing drivers, it will not.
it corrects pure OS related bugs.
but there are exceptions but XP never did add the vast numbers of drivers. not even close.
printers, (no way)
video , no way.
NIC chips, some.
SATA, only tiny list.
audio, no way.

if you have connection, you can go to microsoft and go to the updates page and just update.
if windows thinks your OS is legal, it may update. if not , then not.

examples show that these facts have not changed
my w7 does not support my 2009 ASUS M2 , cmi6501 audio chip, so i had to buy a new add in card. to fix that.
even CMI said, sorry buddy ,no w7 here.

on my wifes system here CMI brand new version dont work, the microphone fails, and have 2 cards that both do same thing.
so i upgraded her to 7.1audio card what that has Windows HQ cert drivers. they work. 100% all channels.

as a last resort ( cash) you can run Drivermax.
it has lots to try , about 1/2 are bad, but you keep trying and you can get joy, seen it done it.
they mix drivers up too, 32bit and 64 and wrong OS.
most i can tell are wrong just by the look of them..
