Windows XP - Internet/Firewall problems

I did a fresh install of Windows XP on my laptop and now for some reason I can't go to any website. It just keeps saying, "The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable (it's Google, and google is rarely down)." I tried installing Google Chrome by putting the install executable on a USB from my gaming desktop onto the laptop, and it always says something about disabling firewall and try again.

Already tried the "Show friendly HTTP error messages" workaround.

Sounds to me like the other poster is saying.

Is that you have not installed the drivers after the new windows installation for both the Ethernet adapter and wirless network adapter for your laptop.

You should have a system restore, disk that came with the laptop, and you may of allso got a disk with all of the drivers for hardware devices of the laptop Mckennan.

I would check Or have a look for them depending on what brand name the laptop is.

If don`t have any of the two.

Then simply write down the brand of the laptop, then flip it over and you will find the laptops model number, write it down.
Then use another computer with a usb flash drive.

Search for the brand and model number of the laptop in a search query with google adding to the end of the search meta drivers.

Download the drivers off the support website for your laptop brand and model number.
You may have to extract the drivers from a compressed winzip archive first of all and then place the extracted files or folder created onto the usb flash drive.

Simply transfer the flash drive to the other computer, or laptop.
And run the driver installation files for the Ethernet adapter or Wi-Fi adapter of the laptop.

Once done restart the laptop.
Go to the windows firewall settings in windows XP and set the security level to medium for incoming traffic and also out going traffic.

And your done.

That's exactly what I did already. I was given the laptop from my girlfriends dad so I didn't get any discs. It's gotta be something in Windows XP because it had Vista on it previously and it connected everything fine. I downgraded because it was running slow on the web. Basically I already did what you suggested. I didn't download all the drivers though, only the internet and the audio. I'll take a second look at the website.

I have the chipset driver now but nothing else is really internet related.

Windows Vista and newer versions come with a large amount of network drivers and for other devices as well. Windows XP however doesn't, go to Control Panel-> System-> Hardware Tab-> Device Manager. Look there if your network adapter appears properly installed. If not, go to your laptop's website, search the exact model you have and hopefully you'll find there its appropriate drivers for Windows XP.

Otherwise use AIDA64 to find out which exact network interface your laptop has so you can look for its drivers at most likely realtek website, or whichever chipset they used for its network interface.
