Windows XP "not genuine" when put in a new machine.

I have a Gateway Profile 5.5 computer that came with Windows XP Pro on it. I want to put it in my modified HP Compaq desktop to improve performance because currently with Windows 7 Ultimate running, it hogs up almost all of the resources that a Pentium 4 processor has to offer (which isn't much).

The problem is....is that when I put the Windows XP hard drive into the computer and boot up, it says Windows is not activated, however, when it's in the Gateway it works just fine. I tried reading up on this but everyone seems to have a slightly different problem than I do....so troubleshooting was almost impossible.

I tried activating it again when it asks for it upon boot up before logging in, but it just sits there on a blank blue screen with my cursor free....sometimes it actually appears, but it always says there's no internet connection to reactivate.

I'm really stumped and would appreciate any feedback....

Please note: I don't have a valid XP disc or any ways to reinstall it upon the hard drive.

Your XP license is tied to the original motherboard, so putting it into your other PC won't work.

call the Microsoft activation number and hope you get Mr.nice guy -- tell them it was lighting or something that got the board wile your crying over the phone to them

The only way is to ask Microsoft. They may or may not say 'yes'.

I've seen this type of question posted on here so often and everyone says the same thing that you're screwed but I know for experience that you can give MS a call to do an activation over the phone. Give them a call and they should be able to help you out.

Microsoft is under absolutely no obligation to allow such a transfer. The license clearly states that such a transfer is prohibited.

and being XP is not supported anymore they may just tell you too bad so sad and buy there new windows 8.1 and get the support you want and now need

I'm not debating that I simply stated I've never had a problem doing it.
