Hello. I was wondering if it is possible for me to install a windows xp or xp pro operating system on a laptop like the HP elitebook 8730w? Or any other newer laptop with a 17 inch screen. Or is windows xp only designed for older smaller laptops?

Solution
Are there any 17 inch screen laptops I can put windows xp on without needing to download drivers?
Simple answer: No, there are not.

Longer answer: Drivers are what make everything work, and they quite often differ from one platform to another. You cannot avoid downloading/installing them, they are an integral part of the OS.

it's possible but not probable that it would work.

drivers are a big problem more than anything else but if you are willing to chase down and try MANY drivers per part to try and get it working, then it might be worth your time. i'd do it as a dual boot so you can at least use it with another os while you try to find drivers. again very unlikely you will find drivers but you might get lucky with some parts.

in the end it would be worth doing as an educational thing but not as a day to day os for the new laptop as you are unlikely to get it working 100%

Are there any laptops with a 17 inch screen that I can put a windows xp pro operating system on without needing drivers? Also, what are drivers by the way? Can anyone explain?

the links he gave are the xp drivers for that laptop. i assumed you had already checked hp's website and knew they were not there so i did not bother. he took the time to look and there they are.

drivers are the software needed to run the various parts and features of the laptop. sound, video, internet, display, touchpad, and so on. without them, most features don't work or are very limited. you will need all the drivers from the link and install them one at a time until everything is working.

if you don't know what a driver is, then perhaps a full OS install is not something you should do on your own. especially an older OS like windows xp that not many know much about anymore since it has not been used for so long.

why do you want xp anyway? there are newer and much better ones to go with. even win 7 is a big step up and easier to use.

I want a windows xp 32 bit laptop so I can play old games along with 16 bit old games on cd. I don't really want it for Internet use. Are there any 17 inch screen laptops I can put windows xp on without needing to download drivers?

you will always have to download some drivers, especially for win xp. there are too many parts out there for windows to have drivers for everything. so they include basic ones and expect you to get the rest of them. newer versions of windows have more built in (hence the HUGE iso size) and go online to get the rest pretty well. xp has very few built in and i have no idea how many have made it to windows update since xp support ended a long time ago.

you are going to have to download drivers no matter what laptop you go with.
