I bought xp pro a year ago and upgraded my laptop to xp. The laptop died
last week.

At work, I need xp pro to be allowed to hook up to the network. Can I buy a
laptop with xp home and then upgrade using the copy of XP Pro I already
bought, or do I need to buy it again to get an activation code?

In a word -- NO. That is piracy. You already have "used"
the activation code once - on another machine. Can't do it
again on a new machine while the old one is still around
(and using XP)

Allan;
Is Windows XP Pro retail or OEM?
If OEM, your license died with the original computer since OEM is normally
permanently tied to the original computer regardless the condition of the
original computer.

If retail, there is no restriction as to the number of computers it can be
transferred as long as it is installed on no more than one computer at a
time.

Read your EULA for more details.

The old one is no longer using XP. It is broken. How do I get a new
activation code?

Contact Microsoft and they'll take care of it. It won't be a problem. You
can move your copy of XP to a hundred different computers, as long as you do
it one computer at a time.

You don't need a new code--you can use the original. If it's been less than
120 days since the original activation on the old machine, you will have to
activate by phone using the phone number provided during the activation
process. Otherwise it should activate over the Internet with out a problem.
