In an office building where I work there are two wireless access points. One belongs to our company and the other belongs to another company. Windows XP can connect to our access point but it sees the other companys access point and switches to connect to the other companies on a regular basis. I've configured our access point as the preferred access point but the laptop continues to switch to using the other companies. Is there a registry hack to turn of access point detection? Am I missing something in the configuration?

Delete the other office from prefered networks, then in Advanced button,
tell it to only connect to prefered networks, and make sure the non
prefered box is empty.

I have the same issue. I have tried the preferred networks method with no luck. Keeps re-detecting the other AP and for a few seconds disconnects both. It eventually switches back to the preferred but not before killing the download and annoying the hell out of me... Any other suggestions?

Try the Funk Odyssey Client in place of the Wireless Zero Configuration
service. You can download a demo from:

Any other solution that doesn't require me to buy something?

Not that it helps any, but I'm having the same problem on a daily basis, apparently whenever my neighbor next door turns on his computer. I don't understand why my network connection "drops" when I have it listed in the preferred networks. Every night I go through three or four rounds of losing my connection, until it finally stabilizes if the neighbor keeps his computer on for a while. But every time he turns his computer off or on, there goes my connection. It would be nice to be able to tell Windows to ignore an available network, but I don't know how to do it.
