I'm currently building a new gaming rig and I want to avoid having to dish out 100 dollars on a new Windows key. I currently have an old Dell Dimension 3000. It hasn't been used in a while because of how old it is but it does have a windows XP key and everything. I was wondering if there is any way I can transfer that windows software to my new gaming rig and upgrade to Windows 7. If theres a step by step process on some website that'll be awesome, thanks for all the help.

Also, you can't upgrade directly from XP to Win 7. You (technically) can upgrade from XP to Vista to 7, but even this requires additional licenses and serves little purpose in the end.

vrumor is spot on, just factor in the cost of the OS now and you'll be much happier in the end.

You also wouldn't be able to use that Dell product key, because it's locked to that Dell machine. It probably wouldn't activate and even if it did, it violates the MS licensing EULA.
