  • Hi!, I´ve recently moved from win xp to win 8.1. I have this old pci express v.92 fax modem which i used in my old pc to connect to the phone line. I installed it in my win8.1 pc but in device manager it won´t recognize it, it only shows it as an unknown device with a question mark beside it. The modem manufacturer, pctel, only has drivers for Windows xp or vista. There´s no driver for win 8.1 or even 7 available. I tried instllling win xp using a virtualization App in this new pc but in virtual Windows xp it won´t recognize the pci device even after installing the xp driver.
My question, is there a way to install a win xp driver in win8.1 using some compatibility method so that Windows 8.1 can recognize the driver and this pci card?? thanks for any info!!

Why even use this? Who uses modems/fax/lan phones in todays day and age???

If you insist, try running the installer in XP compatibility mode. If that still does not work, You don't have much options. You could run a XP virtual machine using Hyper-V or virtual box if you REALLY want this to work, that will work no question but it's a rather extreme option.

Or, just buy a newer version that works with 7/8.1:

There isn't a way to install a XP driver in windows vista/7/8/8.1 The architecture is too different. However you might be surprised to see what has drivers out there. Sometimes the same chip is used by multiple manufacturers and one of those might have a driver. I moved my neighbor from XP to 7 and I used her modem from the old machine. Another solution would be a USB modem. They are about $15-25 on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=usb+modem

I guess you could try and run the setup in compatibility mode or you can try out the 16bit drivers.
