windows XP

No, if my memory serves me right thats illegal. And microsoft released a update that requires all XPs to regester and such. So no that probably isn't a good idea.

Did the guy give it to you as a gift or as something to barrow. If it was a gift and you get to keep it along with the cd key you should be in good shape. You would just have to call microsoft and activate it saying that you bought it off of a friend. However if he is giving it to you to borrow and you wish to install it you will run into legal issues because you are useing a copy of windows that you did not purchase a licence for. There are illegal routes you can take so you dont have to activate it but I would condone that course of action. Now if you have no problems with spending a little can purchase a copy of Windows XP home edition legally from Newegg.com for less that $100.

If its an old computer then you could look into Linux to give it somemore life. I would suggest that you look into OpenSuse or Linspire.

Good Luck

Yeah and how many normal people use gp? The average user who only has one or two machines has no need for pro, it's a waste of money you could use towards something else, like gas :)

Farmertom,

If your friend didn't give you a full retail or upgrade copy and the Certificate Of Authenticity, then you likely won't get any help from Microsoft. They have, however draconian you might think it is, decided that an OEM copy of WinXP can only be installed on the machine it started life with. It can't be moved if you upgrade to a new computer later.

Lost my wife, lost my car, lost my home, lost my kids still have my games and computer. My next life I will be MR.Gates.
Gomerpile, you didn't mention what happened to your dog. Otherwise we could properly decide if you need to become a country music star. 😀

what i have found is that when you have only 1 liscense (ie just 1 cd) and you cannot register it anymore, try validating in another country. i have just 1 upgrade copy of Win XP home but i run it on 6 pcs (and various reinstalls)

Call Microsoft and tell them you had to install some new stuff, video card, hard drive, etc. They have never failed to reactivate over the phone for me. I've had to do this probably 10 times. But only with OEM copies, try it with a prebuilt pos like hp or dell and they laugh at you, even if you replace a truly failed component like a motherboard. MS just sucks.
