windowsimagebackup restore pathname

I'm trying to restore from a previous full system backup, but I've had to relocate the restore data to make it accessible to my server. I've had this same problem before, but can't remember the solution.

If I have the "WindowsImageBackup" folder in the root of a drive, how do I specify the restore path when I'm using the Windows Repair function that comes on the Server 2008 R2 install disk?

for example, if my folder is on J:windowsimagebackup, do I tell it to look on "J", or "J:", or what. I can't seem to stumble on the right pathname.

Is the backup attached locally or on the network?
If locally, then is has to be placed on physically different drive and not on one that is being restored.

I was unable to get a network attachment to work, so I move all 400gb of data onto a locally attached USB drive.

I'm wondering if the fact that at the System Repair prompt, if the computer name fails to match the folder inside the backup image folder?

Is restore process able to access the USB drive?
How about file permissions?

I doesn't like the exFat file system, so I'm trasferring the file to an NTFS unit. Another 5 hour wait...

what windows version are you using? windows 7 and older do not support network backup/restore the media has to be in the computer itself.

edit:: update missed ur post saying your were using a usb enclosure. do you load the drivers for the enclose before starting restore?

Windows Server 2008 R2. It found the drive in order to reject the eFat file system, so I assume the driver is built in.

It would likely be the full path to the "image" file of the backup.
So J:\windowsimagebackup\backup.img (or whatever)

Once I got the backup file onto an NTFS volume, the restore worked fine. The WindowsImageBackup folder needs to be in the root of the drive.
