WinME cannot resolve IPs

Few days back my Windows ME OS suddenly developed this problem : it cannot resolve any IP address. I have tried this with various ISPs, and the problem is with the OS as my Win2000 installation works fine. I had earlier maintained a HOSTS file with common IPs, so Windows ME can only access an IP if it is mapped in HOSTS file, otherwise not. I have tried re-installing TCP/IP protocol, and confirming from winipcfg that the DNS server of ISP is being recognised properly.
Still, Windows ME is not able to resolve any IP and I am unable to browse any new website unless its IP is in my HOSTS file.

Go to the System Restore and take it back to a date before you had this problem.
But really ME sucks and 98SE rules.

Sweeeet!

ya, thats the last resort - but I am avoiding that because I installed quite a lot (non-net-accessing) of programs after that, and most probably I'll have to reinstall them.... :-(
