Problem: User lost hard drive gradually until not useable.

Nt was upgraded to Sp6.

Do not have repair disk (surprise) from after upgrade.

Was able to manually copy all files to a new hard disk
except the following files from 'winnt\system32\config':

software - software.log system - system.log
security - security.log default - default.log
sam - sam.log

What will I screw up if I just manually create these files?

Will the system update them upon booting?

Cannot now boot from new hard disk.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Mike

Those files make up the registry. The operating system doesn't start without
them.

The registry on any Windows NT installation is unique to
the machine.
You can not recover them from another computer.
The registry (ie: SAM, SYSTEM, DEFAULT, SOFTWARE, SECURITY)
are system critical files. Windows NT will not boot
without valid copies of these files, and the SYSTEM hive
must match the hardware configuration for that machine
perfectly.
You must reinstall Windows NT.
If needed, for a drive with spindle failure, it may be
possible to have the drive repaired and recover the data.
Consult a data recovery specialist company for a service
estimate for a failed hard disk drive.
