Hi,

I had set my mind on getting the 350. but then i ran across this posting
against the 350 at www.vcdhelp.com last night.

"An average performer. Doesn't do too well with motion. I think for $70
more, you can get the Canopus AVC-100 which is far superior to this
product when it comes to the quality of the picture if you are planning
to transfer your home videos or your Replay TV (Tivo etc) to burn your
DVD burner. It's PVR feature is decent, but where I live I can't get a
decent reception. I do however like the FM Radio, cuz I can record my
favorite radio show. I'll be returning this product soon."

i understand that the advc 100 captures analog input into DV while the
250/350 captures to Mpeg 2. Can somebody confirm the video quality
between the two when played on msoft media player? Is the quality
difference really that great?

oooh...decision..decision... i really need some help there.

far superior

Having not used the WinTV, I can say nothing about it. However, the
ADVC-100 is an excellent piece of hardware. I've had mine for a couple
of years now and never had a complaint. It's pricey but well worth it.

I use the Hauppauge Win TV-PVR USB 2 and the quality is excellent...
but if you are looking to capture TV like a Tivo then you will get
much better results using Beyond TV 3 or Sage TV...

My experience is that you can get extremely good results with a PVR-250. I
use two of them both as a Tivo replacement (record two channels at once)
and for archiving old VHS tapes.

what about dropped frames and sound synchronisation problems? none of
that with PVR250/350 ?

I have never had either of those problems with the PVR-250.

With another card using software encoding, I used to have both problems
frequently. Both issues went away when I switched to the PVR-250.

One thing you need to make sure of is that you're using CBR recording. If your
record in VBR, then is becomes very difficult or impossible to maintain audio
sync.

What I personally prefer is 7000 Kbps, "program stream", 720x480, 29.97 FPS, motion
precision = 1, noise reduction filter disabled, audio @ 48 KHz, bitrate 224Kbps.

Those are the settings I use in BeyondTV. This gives me files that I can then remove
commercials and bring into Ulead DVD Movie Factory and create a DVD with no
rendering required. If I want to put more than a one hour show on a DVD then I
author to a folder and use DVD-Shrink to re-encode as necessary to fit on recordable
DVD.

Por nada. :->

BTW, the best thing for removing commercials I've found is Mpeg-VCR
(www.womble.com). Does all it's exporting with no re-rendering and is frame
accurate. It's worth every penny of the $50 they charge.

Hmm.. wonder if I could change the resolution and frame rate for PAL
while maintaining the "motion precision = 1, noise reduction filter
disabled, audio @ 48 KHz, bitrate 224Kbps." bit.

I would expect that you should be able to.
