Anytime I try to open a system folder, my computer, or my documents I get an error message that says "windows explorer encountered and error and has to close" I thought maybe SP2 was causing the problem so I removed it but I still have the error.

Do I need to put the WinXP disk in and repair or reinstall? Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

Can you access those things fine from safemode?
Have you done a virus/spyware scan from safemode?

thanks for the quick reply. I haven't tried safemode yet, but I have done scans with Spybot S&D and Adaware and they haven't detected anything.

Have you tried a system restore? Hopefully that doesn’t screw things up worse. Have you check for any updates? Guess it would say you need the SP2, but I would check for more updates after that. I don’t know maybe I repair would work. I don’t think it will hurt (if you can’t resolve it). You can only try to fix something for so long before it’s quicker just to reload the OS, unless you have 50 GBs of games and programs. Good luck.

I rebooted in safe mode and then ran spyware checks again and found some spyware. Deleted it and checked to see if there was some programs installed that I didn't recognize. Sure enough, found some, so I deleted them and now the system is running fine. Thanks again for the help everyone.

I have started getting the same error messages when trying to open a folder and mostly when I right click to copy or move a file. This doesnt happen all the time though. I thought it was because of SP2 so I removed it. Still had the problem so I reinstalled SP2. Don't know ??? It all started after the first time I installed SP2.

For it is not what is seen, but what is not seen. 😱

look for a file running in ur processes "wintaskad.exe" it is located in the program files\windows task ad. I found that this is what was causing the problem for me. You might have the same thing, but I'm not sure.
