I have a HP brand mini itx (APXD1-DM) that I am trying to test to see if it even works. Problem is that it doesn't take a regular 24 pin PSU it takes a 19v DC type plug in. I looked up replacement cords and they run $20 or more. Foolish purchase if this thing doesn't even work. So to avoid that foolish purchase I am trying to foolishly splice a 2 wire DC cord end that fits the board with a 3 wire Dell Laptop power cord....Question would be - Is the 3rd wire (sense I assume) a must have for function? Or will it send the 19.5 volts it is rated for through my DC tip with no problem?

PS- chances are I have already succeeded or burned my apt down before anyone replies because I have waited a month and really want to know if this thing works

I am predicting the appearance of a small mushroom cloud.

It worked.... condition of the board still undetermined but it powered up. The type of plug was the biggest problem, I tried a dozen different ones and none fit. My friend let me borrow his kit with a bunch of plug choices and one finally fit, but we couldn't find the damn power cord for it....I was tired of all the hiccups so i held my breath, closed my eyes....and they went away lol

Ok...some may have noticed my last post about cobbing together a DC plug with 19v for a mini itx board (APXD1-DM) the 3 wires in to 2 only powered the system up for a second, so i found another laptop power supply with only 2 wires and tried again. Similar result except the board has a horrendous high pitch coil whine or something, trys to fire up a few times then just dies... this tower was found in a scrap dump mind you but that actually means little. I have actually savaged 4 or 5 towers from such places and all of them atleast turn on if not totally fine. This is the first tower I have delt with that has a DC plug and it is throwing me off as far as "is it my cobbed up cords? is the board shot?" alot of pins were in face bent in the same direction indicating some sort of pressure like being stepped on could of happened....idk. does the high pitched whine and failed power ups stand out as anything to anyone? I know this is probably a waste of time and the board isn't worth the time but I will probably keep trying either way.

thats the thing...there is no PSU like I'm used to dealing with...its a circle DC type of plug in, like most laptops. There were even special sata cables that individually plug into the board....no 24 pin, no 4 or 8 pin.... im about to take the whole board out and see if i can't remove the power in piece and solder on a different one...i have a few laying around from tearing down laptops...

One was 19.5v the other 18.5v. the 18.5 was even an Hp with 2 wires...the 19.5 was a Dell with 3 wires....being that close I have to imagine it's something else. if i could find a pin out diagram of the current ac dc power jack I would swap it out for one that fits together with what I have...soldering a board isn't terribly difficult if you have the right stuff. ..terribly difficult for the poor sucker i know i mean lol... if i present it as impossible hes gotta prove me wrong...bing bang boom fixed
