Is it recommended to run a long cable from my modem in the living room ( First Floor ) to the 3rd floor ( My Room ) and connect my computer / laptop directly to the modem through the cable?

But won't this have a negative effect on download speed? Like reduce it's speed?

OPTION1: I think you should try WIFI first. signal goes through ceilings a lot easier than walls, and I bet it is going to work well if you have a good wifi router with 3 or more large antennas. The only issue that you might have is speed. Sometimes HD streaming struggles on WIFI and online gaming is not recommended. The benefits are clear. You dont need to plug in, or worry about cables running on your bed and tablet and cellphones also connect for free and without cables.

OPTION2: Network over powerline as suggested by TDarrel9 should work, but you will still have to use cables.

OPTION3: CAT5 or CAT6 network cable. For gaming this is the best but you will need a wifi Access Point to use Wifi devices.

What I have in my house is: 6xCAT6 network points in diffrent rooms. 3xWifi Access points as my walls are made of an Unobtanium 135 composite and signal gets blocked very quickly (not made of wood or paper derivatives). This way my mobile devices are happy, and my media players and PCs dont struggle with speed.

PS: power line adapter does not work for me well as I have 3 DB boards.

Ethernet will always be the fastest and most reliable it is just a pain to get a cable run in a finished house. if you can accomplish it will be the best.

Wireless likely will not work well it is designed to run horizontally and floor/ceiling are extremely dense and absorb a lot of the wireless signals. Powerline depends on the house wiring. It will likely work but even using the newest devices they only get 200-300m in most houses. If you happen to have coax tv cable in both rooms you can try MoCA but like powerline you will not get even close to the speed of ethernet.

Thank you for the suggestions. However OPTION 1 is the option I am currently using and this is the reason why I am looking for an alternative way. The WiFi signal on the 3rd floor is terrible. Internet speed is rarely decent on the 3rd floor.

Should had said that on post#1 to save us some typing.

Simple. Asked all the time.

Ethernet BEST but you have to do the wiring, DUH.
MOCA solution next, if you have an existing unused coax cable from floor#1 to floor#3.
PowerLine the next compromise, buy from somewhere you can return if performance unsatisfactory.

I use Power Line plugs, they are brilliant, you don't loose any speed what so ever, it is basically still a Wired connection so you will get your full internet, it beats WIFI any day and yes you do need a couple of wires, but its much better than having a 30 ft Ethernet cable through your house, just plug the power plug by your router, you get 2 ethernets in the box, plug it in your router, and again plug in upstairs, and plug into your PC, if you are after strong Wireless connection then get a power plug like the one I have, a Wifi power plug, gives you wireless WIFI in your room.
