Wireless adapter vs Wireless router

I am currently building my first PC, and realized that I'm coming short on PCIe lanes. So I've been wondering if I should get a usb wireless adapter or go for a wireless router than just plug myself through ethernet. I've read some reviews and some people say usb connectivity is fine others say that they lose connections every so often. And routers costs more than just an adapter.
Which one would you recommend?

PS. I need an AC capable router/adapter.

USB adapters are fine. Just get one with a detachable antenna or an usb extension cord so you can place it where it works better.

I was thinking of getting the Asus USB AC56. Do you happen to know if it is good and reliable?
