In my college dorm, all we have is an ethernet jack in the wall and standard routers do not work for whatever reason. Ethernet switches do work but I want to have a wireless "ethernet switch". Would using a wireless AP connected to the Ethernet wall jack and having the AP broadcast its signal and be able to connect an Xbox, wireless printer, tablet, laptop, etc to it as though it were a wireless "Ethernet switch"?

That is what a AP is technically. Strange you cannot get a router to work, normally you can get a router to work more often than a switch.

I would still check if you are allowed to run a wireless device on their network generally it is against the rules because you have a small group of people who are too stupid to set up a secure wireless network.
