Wireless is crap anyways for gaming, but I'm going to be using it out of necessity. Is it really going to make a difference for speed with USB vs a component? I also only have a PCIe x4 slot available.

Solution
Wireless cards only use an x1 slot so x4 would work fine.

There is really no difference in performance (PCIe v. USB) if you account for the antenna size, and the ability to move the antenna around can really help, so something like THIS for 2.4GHz.

If you have a lot of other 2.4GHz networks around you consider 5GHz or a pair of good powerline adapters. The new Zyxel PLA5205kit adapters are really good for high bandwidth and low latency uses like video streaming and gaming compared to any other powerline adapters that I have used.

Solution
My son games in the basement using a Dual-Band Wireless USB Adapter and has no problems. The router is on the second floor.

USB wireless adapters will usually suffer from more heating issues than a PCI one. Overheating with a USB adapter usually causes stability and dropping issues. Both are not ideal for gaming as there can be problems with stability, but a PCI wifi adapter is recommended if that is your only option.
