Okay, lots of questions here. I apologize in advance for my ignorance on this topic :)

1. I use a usb2 wireless adapter for my pc. should this adapter match the brand of my router?

2. Would buying a "performance" router over the one charter gives you when you buy their internet be a huge upgrade or would it be a small, maybe even unnoticeable upgrade to upload/download speeds?

3. The reason for the wireless adapter is because i live in a really really big (while also pretty dumpy) home, and my router is on the first floor while my room is on the 3rd floor. would it be worthwhile to plug the modem in downstairs, run long cables up 2 floors to the router, then a short(er) cable from the router to my computer?

4. If that option wont work, what are some of the best router/adapter combos that wont break the bank? usb2 or pcie, i have no preference :) would like to spend less than $200 USD total

Solution
Brand makes no difference that is why there are standards so all manufactures are compatible. Games need very consistant performance they do not care about the speed as much. They need very little variation in the packet delivery times and no loss. Wireless is bad at both these because it is subject to random interference.

You are always better using a cabled connection if it is possible to play games.
