Wireless N 150 drops to 40mbps when playing Battlefield 4

Solution
At home now here are my settings (BTW im connecting at 270Mb) at my router is a cisco WRT310N:

Wireless tab/ Basic wireless settings:

Network mode Wireless N only

Radio band : 40Mhz

Wide Channel: Use whatever

Standard Channel: Use whatever

Wireless Security tab:

Security Mode: WPA2 Personal

Encryption: AES

Advanced wireless settings tab:

Basic Transmission Rate : Default

N Transmission rate: Auto

CTS Protection: Auto

That should be it for Wireless N settings - you should also delete your current WIFI profile on your computer and just make a new one once you set all the settings.

By the way what options are available in your device properties / Multimedia/gaming environment? And what setting are you using for roaming...
Does it get choppy? 40Mbps is plenty for online gaming.

Is there actually a problem?

What really matters is your cable/dsl modem - what kind of internet package do you have? If you have a 20Mb internet connection, it doesn't matter if your N drops to 40Mbps - it's still plenty of bandwidth to game out.

Crowded WIFI can cause lowered speeds, incorrect WIFI card settings, router settings, basically there's tons of things that can go wrong with wireless, especially if you don't know what to look for.

I don't really know how this stuff works but i'll just explain it.

My subscribed internet speed is 5MBPS.

My wireless PCI card is rated 150mbps. At that speed, i get no choppy gameplay in BF4.

But recently its been dropping to 40mbps based on the status. At speed test my internet speed is fine. When I first bought this PCI card, my internet status is always 150 or a little lesser and I have no choppy gameplay. The problem lies in my wifi card. I dont know what is happening.

Even if your connection is 5Megabytes per second and not 5Megabits per second you still have plenty of bandwidth if your WIFI is running at 40Megabits per second. Since 5MB ~ 40Mb.

What is your router model?

You might have to change some settings in your wireless router - for example mine I can connect to by typing in 192.168.1.1 in my Waterfox browser.

You may need to change some settings to be able to get 150Mbits per second in your router.

Look up your routers default username and password - unless you changed it, and log in to see what WIFI settings are available.

If you tell us what is it, we maybe able to guide you in the right direction. It may require some tinkering.

By the way - is this a shared wireless router, or do you only use it?

My pci is a DLINK DWA-525.
Yes i can login to the router's settings but what should i change?

Yes this is a shared network. But the performance drop is happenning even when no one else is using the internet. Im alone at home most of the time.

In my wireless router configuration, I currently use these:

Network mode : Wireless N only

Radio Band: Wide (40Mhz)

WPA2 personal -AES encryption

In advanced wireless settings I have N transmission rate set to auto - you could try setting it manually to 140Mb.

My wireless card settings on my comp Under advanced tab in device manager:

Bandwidth : Value = 20_40Mhz

Roaming Sensitivity : Value = Low

WiFi Confi : Performance

Wireless Mode: 802.11b/g/n

Try those settings out on your router and wifi card in your PC and let us know.

LIke I said I don't know your router model so I can't help you with the options besides giving pointers.

If I set it to N mode i cannot connect to the router. 🙁

My Wifi router is a Cisco E1000 (also known as linksys)

My PCI wireless adapter is a DLINK DWA-525 .
This are the settings from my network adapter. I don't see any setting for wireless N mode :/

And this is the status i get when playing BF4.

Alright. I have a similar looking wifi router from the same company (Linksys/cisco) forgot the exact name but it looks like all the settings are similar.

Open up your browser and go to your Router. Under "Wireless" - set the view to manual. Under Network mode try setting "Mixed mode". I also suggest Hiding your SSD name (you may have to change your wireless profile on your computer so it can connect to non-broadcasting SSID Wifi networks. Try "auto" for channels which is usually 20-40Mhz.

In wireless security - make sure WPA2-personal is selected.

Go to wireless- advanced options - look for N transmission rate - Try Auto for now, or if you want hardcode 140Mb or whatever connection is closest to that speed.

Like I mentioned it may take some tweaking to get the N transmission rate.

I am not at home right now, but I can double check all my settings when I get home - maybe you could take some screens of your WIFI settings (black out any passphrase/SSID/IPs first)?

By the way how far away is your router and your computer you want to connect to?

Hey man, i really appreciate the time you took to help and everything. But I have done everything and I give up. 🙁

I have been trying to fix this for the last 2 days but to no avail. I also resorted to getting a USB wireless adapter, and every got worse. 🙁
Looks like im not gonna be able to play bf4 until I can get a wired connection established to my PC.

Well that really sucks. What OS are you using?

You should download INSSIDER - it allows you to see what WIFI channels are the most congested and allows you to see which wifi channels are being used the least. I am wondering if your area with WIFI is polluted with other signals.

Have you tried the latest driver for your wifi card?:

Also I took some screen caps of my basic and advanced settings on my wifi router:

I wouldn't mind seeing this through with you - if you're still up to it.
